Does it hurt?
It is not uncommon for first time patients to feel anxious about the use of needles.
However, the extremely fine filament needles used in acupuncture treatment are quite different from the painful hypodermic needles most people are familiar with. Generally, patients are pleasantly surprised to find that their insertion is not highly painful, rather relaxing and energizing.
In order to truly affect the body, some sensation should be felt during an acupuncture treatment. These sensations, ranging from a slight pinching sensation to a feeling of numbness, tingling or heaviness, are generally experienced briefly and are a sign that the treatment is having a positive effect. We take special care in familiarizing patients with the procedure and/or using acupressure techniques until a patient is fully comfortable.
Are the needles sterile?
Yes. All the needles we use are sterilized, packaged individually and disposed of after treatment.
How does acupuncture work?
According to Traditional Chinese medical theory, acupuncture works by enabling the free and smooth flow of Qi throughout the body and therein promoting the body's own healing and homeostatic mechanisms.
Is there anything I need to do before treatment?
In order to maximize the benefits from your treatment, please note the following suggestions:
- Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing. Women should not wear one-piece dresses.
- Avoid wearing tight belts or stockings.
- Avoid treatment when excessively fatigued, hungry, full or emotionally upset.
- Please arrive 10-15 minutes early.
- Please bring copies of any pertinent test results, X-rays, MRIs, prescriptions or other information from your health care professional.
How long does a treatment take?
Please allow 60 minutes for an in depth consultation on your initial visit so that we may determine the most appropriate treatment strategy. Subsequent visits will require 30-45 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Some patients experience results after their first treatment. This relief may last but some pain often returns the following week.
Over a full treatment course, consisting of consecutive weekly visits, the duration of pain relief is extended. Acute conditions generally require a shorter course of treatment (4-8 consecutive sessions). While chronic conditions where the body’s homeostatic balance has been significantly affected for many years may take longer to treat.
Please remember that each individual is different and, as such, patient and practicioner will work together to monitor patient progress and adjust treatment accordingly.
